History

The establishment of the Malay Heritage Museum was marked by the early initiatives of Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Fauzi Haji Ramlan, former Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Professor Dato’ Dr. Abdul Mua’ti @ Zamri, former Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia. This effort then became the commitment of Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Pauzi Abdul Latif and Dr. Rahimah Hamdan, the previous directors/coordinators of the Malay Heritage Museum, to collect various artifacts including manuscripts, Malay attire, weaponry, and of course, four traditional houses (Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, and Terengganu) that stand proudly on the Cultural Courtyard. These artifacts are certainly not the first and last to grace the splendor of the Malay world on the green campus of Serdang, because always we strive to obtain similar artifacts that can make the Malay Heritage Museum a landmark of Universiti Putra Malaysia.

The Malay Heritage Museum does not merely function as an exhibition center for knowledge-seeking visitors. It also serves to bring the community closer to scholarly programs in the form of seminars/webinars, workshops, and literary, artistic, and cultural carnivals. Furthermore, the Malay Heritage Museum also provides space for the involvement of the public through services and site rentals, including purposes like weddings, photography, and family days.

The Malay Heritage Museum, Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia, is a registered museum under the International Council of Museums, ICOM, and the Asia-Europe Museum Network. Membership within this international museum institution is crucial to ensure that the museum does not lag in the field of museology.
